100CCC Insanity

100CCC Insanity

May 14-19, 2020

Note: I waited to post my IBA 100 Coast to Coast to Coast ride until I had made my previous post on journaling. In this post, I have copied my Ride Journal of this ride and you will see that I have altered the format of my Ride Journal to accommodate information from my IBA Receipts Shortcuts App (That information is in italics under each day).

Ride Description

These rides from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean and back to the Pacific Ocean are a true motorcycling quest. The 100ccc quest is a motorcycle ride from the west coast to the east coast and back again of the mainland United States.

The 100ccc quest:

While the Iron Butt Association rules give the rider some leeway with documentation requirements in start and end cities, we do ask you to consider this viewpoint of a multi-time 50cc finisher as related by Iron Butt Association WebMaster Dale Wilson:

Several years ago, when Ron Major mentioned that the 50CC was an intriguing ride if one did it as a "pure coast-to-coast" ride and went on to explain what he meant. I heard him describe the act of touching the water on both oceans as being a critical and spiritual part of The Ride.

He led me inside his den and showed me an entire wall jam-packed with trophies and finisher plaques. One bookshelf had little 10-milliliter red-stoppered chemistry vials that contained equal parts of sand and water. Each one was marked with a date/time and either the word "Atlantic" or "Pacific" written on it. Obtaining a sand & water sample at the start/end of a CC ride was also a part of Ron's ritual for this ride. I remember counting 18 vials on his shelf. The shelf below it also had a little cardboard box that was chock full of additional vials, all filled with sand and water, and similarly marked with a date, time, and ocean.

Ride Report

I planned this ride over the winter after reading all I could about it from other riders. In preparation, I did an SS1000 on February 29 and a BBG1500 about a month later. We did not have lockdowns in our state and as the weather turned off nice, the wife and I made use of our four-day weekends often. I planned on doing the 100CCC at the end of March, but my wife was going to stay with our daughter and grandkids in California while I did the ride, but they were nervous about their lockdown and Florida sounded like they were blocking the roads into their state? Anyhow, I asked if I could get some time off work (I work at the hospital) and called my daughter. She had other things planned, so when I talked to my boss again, he had already found co-workers to cover my shifts, So, I left the wife at home, and off I went.

It was a little short notice, that’s the way we usually work, and I threw together my stuff. It’s only a little over 400 miles to San Diego from our home so it wouldn’t be a tough ride to get to the start. When I got to Las Vegas, the wife called and told me I left a couple of items home, both of which I would need. So, I turned around and had her meet me on the south end of Mesquite, NV, and that would save me from coming all the way back home. Glad it was going to be an easy day? An extra two hours of riding and almost 200 additional miles. But it all worked out. I did stop and see the grandkids for a couple of hours too, before finally getting to the hotel.

I got a couple of pictures on the beach and some sand before heading to the hotel. The hotel was not very high class. I had to post $100 on top of the room charge! The room smelled so strong of marijuana that it was unbelievable. My CPAP machine smelled of it the next night too.

Iron Butt Assoc. 100CCC Stop #1

Up and at the gas station the next morning and got everything ready, everything set to zero, and got gas, pictures, and off I went. Somewhere, I saw post wherein the rider had a timer on his bike, well I stole that idea and it helped knowing how I was progressing and I didn’t have to keep track of the time changes as I went along. I think it helped at mid-point when I head back to San Diego, I’ll share that later.

The first day was the best for the weather; perfect temps and no rain. When I did my BBG1500 I just put the bike on 80 mph, the speed limit most of the time, and kept it there. Every two hours or so were my planned stops and for all but one stop my planned stops were perfectly spaced for my fuel.

I got to Junction, TX, found my motel, and crashed on the bed. I figured about six hours off the bike seemed to be the optimal time for my pace and my sleep requirements. I brought some snacks that lasted the first two days, and I would just grab something quick at the gas station or nearby fast food. I kept eating simple and light. What little I saw of west Texas I’m glad most of it was in the dark and I never saw any animals on or off the road.

I was a fourth done with the ride and was feeling pretty good. About halfway through the second day my butt was used to the seat and wasn’t too bad. My lower back would get stiff and sore, but I could usually move around and stretch, especially at stops, which made it okay. Stops progressed and finally, I was in Florida and soon pulling into Jacksonville Beach. I got gas and then off to the ocean for the traditional sand and water from the Atlantic Ocean. It was not as easy as it looked on the map. I finally parked in the way of some parked cars and made it to the beach, feeling like a burglary slinking with a small flashlight. The beach was flat, and the water was about a half-inch deep for 50 feet with each wave. And after being chased back and forth several times, I dug a small hole with my urine specimen jar and was successful in my mission.

I got to the hotel and found it was the right chain but the wrong one for my reservation, it short-run a few blocks away to the right one. The clerk was sleeping in her car with her kids or boy toy and finally came to let me in, almost, she said there were no rooms. I explained I had a reservation, and she said to take it up with someone else. I asked her to call one of their other hotels in their chain. I had learned there were six in the area. She said they were all full and good luck finding a room. I was tired and mad; she just slumped her shoulders up and went back to her car.

Somehow, I called Motel Six and went there and once again crashed. I set my phone on a timer after figuring how much time I had before the first fifty hours were up. Well, I figured wrong, but somehow woke up about forty minutes early and once I figure I needed to hurry, I loaded up and went down the street for a gas or food receipt. About a block away I found the spot and got some food for breakfast and got an end/start receipt, 49 hours, and 45 minutes! The timer earned its keep.

Over the winter I purchased a set of nylon pants typical of most adventure bike dress, but not typical of Harley riders. I wore them on this trip as I had found them very comfortable and rainproof. When it was hot, I could open a zipper on top of my leg, and air would flow from my cuff to there and keep me cool. My mesh jacket with liner worked great when hot with my cool vest or liner.

I listen to books when I’m riding more than music. I don’t like to ride on freeways, especially at 80 mph all the time. The noise level is increased substantially. Then the music or book must be turned up to full volume so you can hear it. It all is wearing on you. The books seem to help me stay alert better than music too.

Well, halfway through the 100CCC and the third day is just making the miles, filling up with gas, and repeat! I did get to see some country that I had missed in the dark, but this is not much of a sightseeing trip. Trying to find the state signs at the borders was a challenge. I have always taken pictures with a small camera that I keep around my next but taking pictures at 80 mph versus 60-65 mph is a huge difference. The miles and stops added up and finally back to Junction, TX for the end of day three.

Day four is the most challenging day of the trip. I’m sure the wear of the trip was increasing, but the weather would be the challenge today for me. By 9:30 am it was 100* and time for the cool vest which helped. What I couldn’t help was the wind from left to right, at least it wasn’t head-on, but enough to push you around a little. The warm temps lasted to about 6 pm when it started to rain. I kept getting tornado warnings coming over the radio, but not knowing the area, had no idea if they were close or not. There were some amazing cloud formations and I kept looking for a sign of tornados, but they never materialized.

Somewhere close to the border of Arizona, the freeway was in a right curve. I had noticed throughout the trip the transition from asphalt to cement at bridges and back to asphalt was pretty rough and uneven. Anyhow, I was in this big sweep curve and came off of the cement to asphalt and the bike felt airborne, the wind was blowing pretty good left to right still, and when I hit pretty hard it really loaded the suspension, and then quickly unloaded. The bike went into a death wobble and it took all I could to hold on to it. I remember thinking, this is going to leave a mark. I braked hard and hung on, finally getting the bike under control. Maybe that was the same place Tim Masterson had trouble and crashed his Janus motorcycle (we were doing this ride at the same time). Well, that was enough excitement for today folks, let's get back to the boring desert.

After Yuma, you start gaining elevation, and past El Centro you are into the mountains. Finally, I could cool off. Well, cool off I did. It got frick’n cold. I thought well I can last over this hill, wrong! I pulled over to get my coat liner, wool gloves, and balaclava on. And what to wondering eyes, snow, covering the bushes! It was 31 degrees, no wonder the mesh jacket wasn’t cutting it. But wait, there’s more! Then the fog or clouds came in thick, I tried following a couple of semis, but they were going too fast for me. But wait, there’s more. Now the rain starts with the fog. Thank goodness it wasn’t freezing to the roadway. I think we had started to drop down at this point. It rained most of the way into San Diego. Well, that was over a 70* change in weather in a matter of a few hours. What a great way to end this ride with some memories of it trying to kill me.

Iron Butt Assoc. 100CCC End of ride

I had not made plans for a hotel in San Diego as I was not sure how I would feel and how far I could go that day. But, I called the wife and had her find me a hotel. I got my last gas receipt near the beach. The timer said, 94 hours and 14 minutes, so I pretty well maintained my pace throughout the ride. I was ready for a good night’s rest without the stress of a timed ride tomorrow, which I got. The next day I took it easy, went to the beach, and got someone to wade in and get some sand and seawater from the Pacific Ocean to finish the tradition. Found our favorite gas station taco stand and headed home. It is great when a plan comes together and makes a successful ride.
